Safety in the home
Private security companies
South Africa is one of the unsafest and most dangerous countries, which has given rise to one of the biggest private security force in the world.
The armed response industry is providing guarding, monitoring and armed reaction to homeowners and security complexes throughout the country.
An armed response company will advise you to have the following security measures installed in your home.
An electric fence
An electric fence is your first line of defence.
Should you install a good electric fence then the visual appearance will be a definite deterrent. It places a 24-hour monitor on the perimeter. If a wire is cut or shorted an alarm is triggered.
The electric fence will have served its purpose as an early warning device should the above occur.
Unlike most house burglar alarms it will inform you of the property boundary. Furthermore, you can link your electric fence to your existing security service rapid-response provider.
If you install a correctly fitted electric fence you minimise the chances of the criminal gaining access. An electric fence also minimises the chance of the criminal making a quick escape and/or get-away. Therefore, you are at a distinct advantage over a property not fitted with an electric fence.
Install the right alarm system for your lifestyle
One of the least intrusive ways to protect your home is to install an alarm system. A number of options are available to you.
Sensors or beams in your home
The alarm is triggered when movement is detected by the sensors and beams. Regardless of the number of sensors, you install you can choose which sensors to activate. Sensors in the bedroom can be turned on when you are out and turned off again when you are sleeping. Beams can also be set to accommodate pets.
Place beams in front of your doors and windows, to alert you and the security company of intruders.
Entry point sensors
Entry point sensors on doors and windows are vital. These sensors allow you to slightly open windows but still stay protected.
Burglar bars are essential physical barriers
Burglar bars are an effective deterrent. They come in many styles and designs and do not need to detract from the overall aesthetic of the home. An example is Spanish burglar bars on the exterior. Stylish interior bars can also blend into the overall design, e.g. retractable burglar bars.
Experts advise that additional protection of doors is essential, as this remains the most common entry point for burglars. Therefore, security gates are the most common and effective solution. In addition, install a high-quality security gate with a deadbolt and a spring-loaded lock. A deadbolt lock is stronger than a normal lock. Furthermore, the spring-loaded lock allows you to slam the gate closed in an emergency.
Physical security is your last line of defence
Robbers take approximately three minutes to over-power you. Having a multi-layer security system is optimal. Thereby physical barriers are your last line of defence.
If cost is a concern, install security in stages. Start by securing the most vulnerable windows and doors. Try to install the highest quality barriers possible, as these are significantly stronger than cheaper versions.
